Need
Respiratory Distress syndrome (RDS) is a breathing disorder in premature babies caused by the immature development of 
lungs. It is a significant cause of neonatal mortality, causing over 150,000 deaths annually in India and over half a million across Emerging
Markets.

While many of these deaths can be prevented by the application of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy, neonates in Emerging Markets often do not have access to this technology. Reasons for this include lack of infrastructure and thus long distances to CPAP facilities, limited transportation options, and low manpower skill levels.

As a result, one-third of the RDS-related deaths in India occur during transportation.

Solution
Saans is a portable, easy to use, robust, neonatal CPAP device designed to provide short-term breathing support for infants suffering 
from Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) in non-NICU settings. Saans is the world’s first CPAP device with a manual powering option, and is designed to work during transport as well as secondary care settings. 

Saans offers breathing support to neonates before and during transport to a NICU for longer-term care and will help address over 150,000 RDS-related deaths each year in India.

The device was conceptualised and developed in partnership with the Consortium for Affordable Medical Technologies (CAMTech) and the 
Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

Technology
Saans is an infrastructure-independent, low-skill, neonatal CPAP device designed specifically for low-resource settings. 

The key technology features are: 

  • Multiple power options - device can be operated on electricity, in-built battery with 2 hours backup, compressed gas, or in the absence of all of these a manual mode with the use of an ambu bag
  • Integrated Air-Oxygen blender
  • Light 5kg and portable with handle/sling for easy transportation
  • Compatible with standard patient interfaces
  •  Robust mechanical device for use in low-resource settings
